The Summer Went

Behind the music

I haven't been out much this summer, thanks to COVID-19. The usual promises of summer seemed to fall flat, leading to a somewhat bleak autumn, leaving me feeling as though we somehow skipped a season. As I refer to in the chorus of the song, my 1880s Victorian house is heated by an old furnace which needs to be manually started with a handheld butane lighter or match. It's a symbolic annual tradition representing the onset of autumn when I need to make my way down to the basement, clear last year's ash out of the chimney flue and set the furnace roaring to life again. This year, the cold weather came sweeping in way before I was ready, stealing the last gasp of summer that had already been stolen away by the pandemic. I found myself steeped in nostalgia for autumn seasons gone by, clinging somewhat to the memory of their normalcy and wanting to go back to that simpler version of this season. The musical outcome of that feeling was that I found myself drawn back to the sounds of the great alt/emo indie rock bands of the '90s and '00s. With the melodic guitar lines of the Smashing Pumpkins, American Football or (more recently) Free Throw, and others ringing in my head, I walked down to my local park, sat down in a pile of leaves and The Summer Went came out like a deep sigh.

I had some fun with this one on instagram, including bouncing the song down to cassette tape and showing the live process of adding an ambient layer to the verse with my sampler and guitar effects.

Official lyrics

For Tuesday - The Summer Went lyrics (also available on Genius)

I've been walking down my street, and I've been walking back
There's not a lot to do when I'm in between wearing a mask
But walking always leads you home
Straightens you up after a long dull day on the phone

Now it's really hitting me the way the summer went
Now I'm back in the basement and I'm setting a spark to my furnace again
And it's really hitting me the way the summers went
I can't believe it's not 2013, can we please slow this thing down?

I've been turning up the reverb all the way
I like the way it lets me think of less notes to play
And I've been hearing echos slap off the wall
Answering machine daydreams from years ago

Now it's really hitting me the way the summer went
Now I'm back in the basement and I'm setting a spark to my furnace again
And it's really hitting me the way the summers went
I can't believe it's not 2013, can we please slow this thing down?

I've been looking for a new good flannel shirt
I've been listening to Never Meant
I've been looking forward to going back to normal
But that's a lie, that's a lie
